Who provides it
The psychiatric providers you see are women.
Their work is supervised by Alejandro Alva, M.D., who founded Pacific Neuropsychiatric Specialists. He oversees psychiatric care here rather than seeing clients directly, and his full background is on the About page.
What to expect
Across a thirty-day stay, that weekly rhythm means a change can be made and then followed closely in the days after it.
If you arrive on medication, the aim is to get it right for you. Living somewhere with support around the clock means how a medication is working, and what it is doing to your sleep, appetite and mood, is noticed day to day.
What medication management involves
The National Institute of Mental Health describes psychiatric medication as most often used alongside therapy, with the plan worked out together with the prescriber. It also stresses monitoring: people starting an antidepressant should be watched closely, especially in the first few weeks, and many medications take several weeks to reach their full effect.
Not everyone who comes here takes medication, or starts it. Psychiatric care is part of the program either way, and any decision about medication is made with you.
NIMH also advises against stopping a prescribed medication without your prescriber’s guidance, even when you feel better, because some need to be reduced gradually. If you want to come off something, that is a conversation to have here, not a decision to make alone.
Questions worth asking about any medication
Whether you arrive on a medication or start one here, these are fair questions to put to whoever prescribes it:
- What is it for, and how will we know whether it is working?
- How long before it reaches its full effect?
- Which side effects are common, and which should I report straight away?
- How will it interact with anything else I take?
- What should I do if I miss a dose?
- If I want to stop, how would we do that safely?
What psychiatric care covers here
Psychiatric care here addresses anxiety, depression, trauma, and grief and loss.
This is a residential mental health program. It is not an opioid treatment program and not a medical detoxification facility. If you are lawfully prescribed medication for a substance use disorder, that alone does not exclude you. Decisions are individual and based on safety, stability and program fit.
