- About 90 to 96 miles, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on where you start.
- One road, most of the way
- Highway 74, known in Orange County as the Ortega Highway, begins in San Juan Capistrano and runs east through the Santa Ana Mountains and Hemet, then climbs into the San Jacinto Mountains. Turn north on Highway 243 at Mountain Center for the last few miles into Idyllwild.
- Flying in
- John Wayne Airport is roughly 95 miles away by road. Palm Springs International is the closest airport to Idyllwild, about an hour.
- December to March

The drive runs from the coast to around 5,400 feet, and the setting at the end of it could hardly be more different: a small arts town among the pines, with four seasons, between Mount San Jacinto State Park and the San Bernardino National Forest.
