Residential mental health treatment for women near Palm Springs
From Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, Mental Health Residential is about an hour up the Palms to Pines Highway: a six-bed house for women in Idyllwild, in the mountains above the desert.
Getting here from the desert
- Distance and time
- About 40 to 50 miles, roughly an hour, depending on where in the valley you start.
- The route
- Highway 74 west from Highway 111, the Palms to Pines Scenic Byway. It climbs the switchbacks known as Seven Level Hill to Mountain Center, then Highway 243 runs about four miles north into Idyllwild. The climb is steep and winding, so allow time and take it slowly.
- Flying in
- Palm Springs International is the closest commercial airport to Idyllwild, about an hour away by car. Useful if family is flying in from out of state.
- In winter
- Highway 243 can see snow between December and March. Chains may be required during storms and the road can close in heavy snowfall, so check conditions before you drive.
From the desert floor to the pines
The drive is short, and the change is not. Idyllwild sits at around 5,400 feet, among ponderosa and Jeffrey pines, with four real seasons. While the valley bakes through the summer, Idyllwild typically stays in the 70s and low 80s.
For many women, that contrast is part of the point. The routine, the commitments and the people who need something from you are an hour down the mountain, and close enough to reach, but not close enough to keep interrupting the work.
